Two months after the attack that struck the heart of the nightlife in Syracuse, a breakthrough in the investigation has arrived. Law enforcement has executed a custody order in prison against a 30-year-old from Syracuse, believed to be the alleged perpetrator of the attack that destroyed a kiosk on Via del Foro Vittorio Emanuele II on the night of January 15.

The arrest was carried out yesterday at the end of a joint operation by police and carabinieri, at the request of the investigating judge of the Syracuse Court, upon request from the Prosecutor's Office. The suspect has been taken to the detention center in Contrada Cavadonna.

According to the investigators' reconstruction, the man did not act alone. Together with an accomplice, yet to be identified, he allegedly placed the explosive device in front of the structure, causing the detonation that destroyed the kiosk which was set to open in the following days.

Crucial for the investigation was the analysis of public and private surveillance systems in the area, which allowed for the reconstruction of the suspects' movements. These elements were supplemented by observation and surveillance services, along with witness testimonies collected by investigators, which helped to solidify the accusatory framework.

The incident is part of a series of intimidation acts against the Borderi family, well-known local entrepreneurs and owners of the historic dairy in Ortigia. The kiosk targeted at the Marina represented a new investment, the inauguration of which was imminent.

Just on January 9, only six days before the explosion, an arson attack had struck the warehouses of the Ortigia market, adjacent to the main business, causing damage to the structure and destruction of materials. Two closely timed incidents that had raised strong alarm among citizens and business operators, reigniting the debate on security.

Despite the arrest, the investigations continue to identify the accomplice and clarify the motive. Investigators are trying to determine whether this is an action linked to organized crime or an episode related to extortion dynamics.
