Tragedy on State Road 122: the dramatic background of Vincenzo Vigna's death
At the wheel of the Fiat Punto that crashed into an SUV, he replaced his son who was without a license
The son did not have his driver's license and the father took the wheel. During the trip, the head-on collision with an SUV, the crash against the metal barriers, and the driver's side of the car reduced to a tangle of metal.
A particular, tragic and chilling detail emerges in the reconstruction of the car accident that occurred last Friday along the state road 122, in the Madonna dell'Aiuto area, in the territory of Canicattì, near a gas station.
Vincenzo Vigna, the seventy-five-year-old retiree, who lost his life should not have been driving. The son had forgotten his driving document and the father, to avoid problems in case of a possible police check, decided to take the wheel of the Fiat Punto. A choice that unfortunately proved to be fatal, but no one could have imagined that death was waiting for the retiree on that stretch of road.
Father and son, originally from Mussomeli, were in that area of Canicattì to attend a business meeting. And there is another incredible aspect of the dramatic accident. Just a few minutes after the terrible impact, two healthcare workers, both from Mussomeli and returning from a healthcare facility where they work, came to assist the Vigna family. They immediately recognized their fellow citizens and while waiting for the emergency services to arrive, they provided first aid to the younger Vigna, but they could do nothing for the retiree who died practically on the spot.
Vincenzo Vigna, married, father of children, was a well-known person in Mussomeli and not only in the Nisseno area. Described by everyone as a "gentleman", a "man of another time", never a word too many, polite and helpful. Meanwhile, the appropriate investigations by the Traffic Police of Agrigento are ongoing to try to piece together all the details of the dynamics of the head-on collision that resulted in one death, namely the seventy-five-year-old retiree, and two injuries, the victim's son who occupied the passenger seat and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the accident, which overturned on its side following the impact.
And following the initial findings in the investigation coordinated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Agrigento, there is one person under investigation. This is a forty-five-year-old from Canicattì, accused of the offenses of vehicular homicide, personal injury, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The man was driving the SUV with a trailer for transporting horses, which collided with the Fiat Punto where the Vigna family was traveling. Immediately after the accident, the injured were taken to two different hospitals for treatment and medical examinations. The forty-five-year-old has already been discharged – with a prognosis of forty days – from the Sant'Elia Hospital in Caltanissetta where he arrived in critical condition on Friday evening, while the victim's son is currently hospitalized at the Barone Lombardo Hospital in Canicattì, with various injuries across his body but fortunately is not in serious condition.
