Hiker trapped on a boulder at the Gole del Drago: rescued

Sicilian Alpine and Speleological Rescue Technicians in action in the Dragon Gorges (Corleone) to rescue a hiker, stranded on a boulder in the middle of the Frattina stream, who was at risk of being swept away by a flood of water and mud.

The man, a Palermitan, was part of a group of hikers who had decided to closely observe the spectacle of the waterfalls, whose flow has significantly increased after the rains of the past weeks.

Unlike his companions, he had decided to get closer by reaching a large flat boulder that had been exposed. But within minutes, perhaps due to the rain that fell upstream, the river of water and mud swelled, no longer allowing him to climb back to the bank.

Given the dangerousness of the situation and the approaching darkness (in the same area on November 3, 2018, the Palermitan pediatrician Giuseppe Liotta, 40, lost his life swept away by the flood of the stream during a flood, but his body was found four days later 6 kilometers away), the hikers alerted the Alpine Rescue, which sent two teams.

Upon arrival, the SASS technicians set up a zip line after literally forging through the swollen stream. The man was secured, hung from the zip line, and brought to shore, chilled but safe.
