Failed night raid on the postamat: significant damage, thieves empty-handed

A violent explosion, shaking windows, and the crash of torn metal breaking the silence of the night. It could have been a heist worth tens of thousands of euros, but it ended up as a heap of twisted metal and a hasty escape.

It was 2:25 AM on the night between last Tuesday and Wednesday when the explosive gang struck the post office on Via Catira San Gregorio, leaving behind significant damage but no loot. According to the initial reconstructions carried out by law enforcement, which are still being verified, the gang arrived at the scene in a large displacement vehicle. The technique used is the unfortunately well-known “marmotta”: a metal device loaded with gunpowder inserted directly into the slot of the ATM.

However, the calculation of the charge or the structural resistance of the door worked against the criminals. Despite the power of the explosion tearing apart the outer part of the Postamat, the internal safe held up, remaining sealed. Realizing that the heist was now compromised and that the alarm would bring patrols to the scene within minutes, the criminals got back into their car, fleeing at high speed towards the outskirts.

The acoustic impact of the explosion was devastating for those living nearby. Many citizens jumped out of bed in the middle of the night, fearing the worst. "We heard a deep boom, a vibration that shook the walls. For a moment, I thought it was an earthquake or the explosion of a boiler in the building," recounts a witness who lives just a few meters from the post office. Fear gave way to shock when, looking out from their balconies, residents saw the cloud of smoke rising from the post office and heard the screeching of the tires of the fugitives. The carabinieri from the local company arrived at the scene within minutes, isolating the area to allow for scientific investigations. Investigators are now combing through the surveillance camera footage in hopes of identifying the license plate of the vehicle or any elements useful in identifying the members of the group.
