«The right is ahead of many others, in fact». With this statement, both personal and deeply political, Alessandro Basso, mayor of Pordenone from Brothers of Italy, announced his imminent civil union with Loris Bazzo, a member of the League and mayor of Carlino (Udine).

This news is not only the culmination of a solid relationship built over five years, but also marks an unprecedented shift in the national landscape, capable of undermining established narratives about civil rights. The ceremony will take place on June 27 in the Chiostro di San Francesco in Pordenone.

Despite their intense institutional commitments in their respective municipalities, the two already live together in Carlino, where they share their daily life with two French bulldogs and two cats.

Beyond the private dimension, it is the public impact of this choice that captures attention in Friuli Venezia Giulia. «We are proof that times have changed and that it is possible to face these choices with serenity, without having to hide anything», Basso explained.

His words build an unexpected bridge between the historical positioning of his area and the lived reality. Already a regional councilor and school principal, the mayor does not deny his roots: «We are two practicing Catholics and, both for religious belief and political conviction, we are strongly oriented towards the respect for the traditional family and its values».

With pragmatism, however, he adds that «life takes different paths, and we have chosen to walk it with honesty and in the light of day», also recalling the difficulties faced in the past by his future husband, a father of two children.

For Basso, this choice marks the overcoming of barriers and a clear signal of political maturity. Upsetting established oppositions, he states: «Our marriage summarizes many years of attacks from the left. [...] It must be said that the right has surpassed the left on the issue of rights: until some time ago it was unimaginable».

An “unprecedented” event also in form: a couple made up of two sitting mayors remains a very rare occurrence.

The reactions did not take long to arrive. The Democratic Party of Friuli Venezia Giulia expressed "sincere congratulations without controversy" for such a significant step, but simultaneously recalled a historical fact: this possibility was "made possible by the civil unions law approved by a center-left government with a vote of confidence", a regulation against which the center-right then opposed.

For the center-left, the upcoming wedding confirms that "the time was ripe for a good law"; alongside the congratulations came the hope that the happiness of Basso and Bazzo would be "a good omen for the many couples who, due to status, prejudices, or other reasons, cannot live their love in full light" nor formalize it by acquiring equal rights and duties.

Thus, June 27 will not only establish a personal bond but will write a new page, rich in reflections and implications, for Italian public life.
