Modica Cemetery, Hon. Abbate: "Restoration is necessary and not just prohibition"
The Municipality must be ready with an executive project when the call for proposals is issued.
The municipal cemetery of Modica
The inspection by the Civil Engineering Department of Ragusa in the oldest part of the Modica cemetery has confirmed the feared critical issues: the exceptional wave of bad weather linked to “Cyclone Harry” has worsened an already fragile situation, making safety interventions no longer postponable.
This was reported by Honorable Ignazio Abbate, who had requested the inspection from the competent regional office.
"The recent inspection carried out by the Civil Engineering Department of Ragusa at the oldest part of the Modica cemetery has confirmed what we feared: the exceptional wave of bad weather linked to 'Cyclone Harry' has aggravated an already precarious situation, making safety interventions urgent."
"The report highlights the need to immediately initiate a campaign for structural investigations to define the consolidation plan for the floors and the compromised masonry structures.
My primary objective will be to insert a specific provision with a substantial financial allocation in the next budget variation, not only for the Modica cemetery but for an extraordinary plan that concerns all ancient and monumental cemeteries in Sicily, which are in precarious conditions and at risk of collapse.
And with them, the history and thousands of niches would collapse.
We have brought the problem to light, and for this, I thank the Technical Department of the Infrastructure Department and the Civil Engineering Department for the inspections, thanks to Councilor Aricò, who immediately took the issue to heart, starting from the hearing requested by myself in the infrastructure committee, and the technical department of the infrastructure department directed by Engineer Alongi.
It is essential that the Municipalities prepare executive projects to be ready when the call for proposals is issued."
