shadow circuit
Illegal betting behind the legal facade: unsuspected agency shut down. Here’s what was happening behind the counter.
Police raid in Raffadali: the police chief of Agrigento suspends the license of a well-known center for 30 days
The line between legality and illegality ran along the same counter. Behind the reassuring facade of a regularly authorized betting center, there was a parallel and illicit business that did not escape the authorities' radar. For this reason, the State Police has sealed a public establishment in Raffadali, suspending its activities for thirty days.
The "double game" of betting
The operation stemmed from a targeted inspection by officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency, who entered the premises for a routine check. On the surface, everything seemed in order: police license displayed and a valid grant from the Italian state.
However, the inspection revealed a very different reality. The owner was allegedly managing a true "double track":
1. The legal circuit: Bets placed correctly on behalf of a state-concessioned company.
2. The "shadow" circuit: An illegal betting collection activity linked to a bookmaker without a state concession and lacking the necessary public safety license.
The tough stance of the police chief
The situation revealed by the inspection prompted the police chief of Agrigento, Tommaso Palumbo, to intervene decisively by signing the suspension order executed by the Administrative Team of the Police Headquarters.
This is not just a bureaucratic sanction, but an act aimed at curbing a form of "abuse of title" that contaminates the legal gaming market. The declared goal of the Provincial Authority of Public Safety is twofold: to protect public order and the safety of citizens; to restore legality, ensuring that only those operating within the boundaries of state laws can engage in such activities.
Thirty days of darkness
From the early hours of today, the shutters of the betting center will remain down. Thirty days of suspension that represent a strong signal for the area: the fight against illegal gambling and the infiltration of unauthorized individuals remains a top priority for law enforcement in Agrigento.
