A page destined to enter the legend of Italian sports. At Daikin Park in Houston, the National Baseball Team led by manager Francisco Cervelli achieved a memorable feat, defeating the United States 8-6 in the World Baseball Classic.

This is not the first victory ever against the stars and stripes selection, but this one carries enormous significance: never before had the Azzurri defeated an American team of this caliber, composed entirely of Major League Baseball professionals.

The Texas night unfolded under the watchful eyes of the United States Ambassador to Italy, Tilman J. Fertitta, originally from Houston, and Consul Mauro Lorenzini, guests of the Italian delegation.

The start seemed challenging for the azzurro lineup: McLean, young star of the New York Mets, controlled the first inning and part of the second without any trouble. However, the Italian bats soon shifted gears. Teel broke the deadlock by sending a fastball from McLean over the left field for a home run, making it 1-0. Right after, with Caglianone on base after being hit, Antonacci added another home run, completing a remarkable inning and setting the score at 3-0.

To consolidate the lead, Lorenzen delivered a performance on the mound of absolute cleanliness. Fueled by his effective pitches and another hit from Caglianone over the fence, Italy managed to extend their lead to a margin of eight points during the game.

In the final moments, however, the challenge intensified. The U.S. batting order orchestrated a powerful comeback, keeping Italian fans on the edge of their seats until 5:19 in the morning. To seal the deal, relief pitcher Weissert was called in during the most tense moment and calmly ended the game by striking out two superstars, Henderson and Judge.

Italy's journey in the Classic now depends on the next decisive match against Mexico. Whatever the outcome of the tournament, the night in Houston will remain etched in the heart of Italian baseball.
