The redevelopment works on Via Monelli, known as "the cemetery road", have begun. This artery has long remained on the fringes of urban mobility, despite representing, along with Corso Mazzini and Via Risorgimento, the third link between Ragusa Superiore and Ragusa Ibla. The intervention, awaited for years and deemed strategic by the municipal administration, aims to restore full functionality to an existing but underutilized route due to the degradation of the road surface and poor lighting, resulting in safety concerns. The renovation will help alleviate traffic on the other two main arteries and improve the overall usability of internal connections. The works are funded by funds from the Ibla Law and additional regional resources. The project involves 1,420 meters of roadway and includes the laying of 6,500 square meters of new asphalt, the reconstruction of dry stone walls, the installation of 50 new lighting fixtures, and the consolidation of the slope, an essential intervention to ensure stability and safety along the entire route. The mayor of Ragusa, Peppe Cassì, commented on the start of the construction site: "Via Monelli is a road that has always existed, but has been underutilized for too long. Redeveloping it means restoring an important connection to the city, improving mobility, and enhancing an area that deserves attention. It is an intervention that looks to the present but especially to the future of our road network".
The redevelopment of Via Monelli is part of a broader framework of interventions on urban mobility, with the goal of making Ragusa more accessible, safer, and more functional. A forgotten road thus becomes a fundamental piece in the network of urban connections, helping to reshape the geography of daily movements between the two souls of the city.
