Catania, work begins on flood prevention in via Domenico Tempio: investment of 267,000 euros

The upgrading work of the rainwater collection system in via Domenico Tempio and the three streets that converge there has begun. The intervention, valued at 267,000 euros fully funded by municipal funds, aims to permanently solve the flooding problem that has plagued the area during heavy rains for years.

The plan includes two complementary lines of action. On the tributary roads — via del Principe, via SS. Maria Assunta, and via Stella Polare — cross drains will be installed to intercept water flows before they reach the main road. On via Domenico Tempio, however, longitudinal collection works will be carried out to increase the drainage capacity of the current roadway. The goal is to prevent water volumes from concentrating on the main road, the main cause of flooding incidents that have caused inconvenience to residents, merchants, and motorists over the years.

“We are keeping a precise commitment made to the citizens,” said Mayor Enrico Trantino and the Maintenance Councillor Giovanni Petralia. “Recurring floods were no longer tolerable: a structural solution was needed, not stopgap measures. This construction site demonstrates that even historical critical issues can be concretely resolved, restoring livability and safety to the area.”

The executive project was drafted by surveyor Orazio Parisi under the direction of project manager engineer Giovanni Origlio. The current drainage system, while adequate under normal conditions, proves insufficient during heavy rainfall, when the three tributary roads simultaneously channel large amounts of water towards via Domenico Tempio.

The intervention is part of the broader plan to upgrade the urban drainage network that the Trantino administration is carrying out in various neighborhoods, in response to increasingly frequent and violent weather events. During the works, the passability of the affected roads will always be guaranteed, with possible one-way alternating traffic regulated by signage and construction personnel.
