After more than forty years of waiting, the historic “ecomostro” of contrada Murazzorotto in Randazzo has finally been demolished: a three-story illegal building, constructed in the 1980s by Oliviero Sangani, convicted in 1998 for mafia association and in 2002 for the Spartà massacre. The intervention marks a clear assertion of the State and a symbolic step in the process of restoring legality. Crucial to this operation was the role of the Carabinieri of the Randazzo Company, who acted on multiple fronts. On the investigative front, with the “Terra Bruciata” operation of 2022, the Carabinieri definitively dismantled what remained of the Sangani clan in the area, severing a historic criminal foothold. At the same time, with the “Game Over” operation last January, the military thwarted attempts at reorganization, ensuring a firm and timely response from institutions against any form of abuse.

On the operational front, in the last 24 months, the Carabinieri, in close collaboration with local police, extraordinary commissioners, and other involved administrations, have provided support and oversight during the dismantling of the material symbols of that mafia hegemony: from the demolition of the Sangani sheepfold on March 5, 2024, to the demolition of the homes of mafia family heads — particularly that of Salvatore on March 13, 2025 — to the removal, on March 3, of the “ecomostro” attributed to Oliviero Sangani. This demolition is not just an urban and environmental restoration intervention: it represents a concrete signal that strengthens citizens' trust in institutions and encourages, day by day, the choice of legality.
