Third derailment: tram of line 15 derails in Rozzano
It happened near the Fiordaliso shopping center: line interrupted with replacement buses
The central carriage of a tram on line 15 derailed this morning in the municipality of Rozzano, at the border with Milano, near the Fiordaliso shopping center. The vehicle had just departed from a stop and was moving at low speed. No injuries have been reported. The line is interrupted and a replacement bus service has been established.
This is the third incident of this kind following the derailment of a vehicle on line 7 that caused two deaths and dozens of injuries on Viale Vittorio Veneto in Milan last February 27, and the incident on Saturday evening, when a tram on line 9 without passengers on board derailed in the curve between Via Galvani and Via Filzi, next to the Central Station.
"The new incident this morning, with a tram on line 15 derailing at the border between Milano and Rozzano, represents yet another wake-up call for the city's public transport system.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but we cannot ignore that this is the third accident in the span of ten days," said Amir Atrous, a member of Forza Italia Milano, commenting on the derailment that occurred near the Fiordaliso shopping center.
"After the tragedy on February 27 on Viale Vittorio Veneto, which caused two fatalities and numerous injuries, and after the derailment of another tram that occurred a few days ago near the Central Station, it is evident that the frequency of these incidents demands serious and immediate reflection. Public transport is an essential service and must guarantee citizens high and consistent safety standards."
"For this reason, we ask Mayor Giuseppe Sala and the city councilor for Transport to urgently convene the leaders of ATM to provide full clarity on what is happening and to define an extraordinary plan for verification and maintenance of both the vehicles and the track infrastructure."
"It is also essential to carefully check the working conditions of drivers. Those who drive these vehicles every day perform a delicate and highly responsible task and cannot be forced to do so under conditions of high stress or fatigue."
