The real challenge for young people from Palermo is on social networks. A battleground among kids, with a huge problem: the virtual often turns into reality, as we have seen. With real gangs.

On TikTok, videos and messages are increasingly appearing, published by groups of young people, who use the platform to launch provocations and claim the supremacy of their neighborhood over others. Short clips, overlay text, and comments fuel a competition between different areas of the city, with content designed to demonstrate “who's in charge”.

One of the accounts that publishes this type of material refers to the Ballarò neighborhood in the historic center. The videos posted feature writings and messages directed at other areas, with direct challenges. One of the posts reads: “Ballarò is in charge, all the areas are ‘addannano’, we are always ready for everyone, there are no rivals. Whenever you want, instead of writing things about Ballarò, come down to the square and we’ll ‘snatch’ your head”. The message concludes with the phrase “my neighborhood is in charge”.

The content explicitly references other neighborhoods, including Sperone, Falsomiele, Villaggio Santa Rosalia, and Zen. The posts contain messages that call out these areas, presented as potential rivals. The texts are often accompanied by emoticons such as chains, lightning bolts, or pirate flags.

The images shared in the videos often show scenes of fires, piles of garbage, or situations of urban decay. The clips are used as a backdrop to launch messages accompanied by overlay text.

In one of the videos circulated on the platform, images of garbage, wooden pallets, and materials piled up in an area between buildings appear. The video features a message that reads: “Ballarò is in charge and all the areas know we are always ready”, accompanied by some emojis. In another piece of content published by the same profile, a provocation reads: “If you have the guts, all of Palermo, like Sperone, Falsomiele Villaggio, write to this account and we’ll show you who’s in charge”.

References to the neighborhoods are repeated in the descriptions of the posts and in the writings inserted in the videos, which call out the different areas of the city. Among the thousands of views, the first comments also appear, a sign that the messages reach their intended audience and contribute to fueling a sort of feud between neighborhoods. Among these is a message from a profile: “If we from Monreale come down, you can run away”. The comment appears alongside other reactions, including emojis and brief messages posted by other users.

The main image associated with the profile linked to Ballarò features the phrase: “Revenge has no expiration date”, used as a quote in the account's presentation along with the group's name. This is a phenomenon that contributes to fostering a climate of tension in the capital, especially in light of the news events in recent years that have seen several young people, just over twenty, lose their lives.
