Sinner between the dream of the 'Sunshine Double', Djokovic's record, and fair play: now there is the obstacle of Michelsen

Jannik Sinner does not stop. On the hard court of the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the number two in the ATP ranking defeated Corentin Moutet with a clear 6-1 6-4 in just one hour and twelve minutes. A performance in absolute control, confirming the extraordinary form of the Italian.

Coming off the triumph at Indian Wells just a week ago, Sinner continues his pursuit of the prestigious “Sunshine Double” in this early part of 2026, a goal that requires exceptional physical and mental endurance from one coast to the other of the United States. The Italian also broke the record for sets won in the Masters 1000, previously held by Djokovic.

However, the Miami evening will also be remembered for a gesture that goes beyond the numbers. In the second set, with the momentum on his side, Sinner interrupted the rally, admitting that he had touched the ball with the frame: “I think I touched it”, he told his opponent, effectively giving the point back.

Having overcome the French obstacle, the round of 16 against American Alex Michelsen looms on the horizon. Born in 2004 and already in the Top 30, the American is a “first-strike player” with an aggressive forehand, aimed at taking time and initiative away from his opponent. The last encounter clearly favors Sinner: at the 2024 US Open, on the Arthur Ashe Center Court, the Italian won 6-4 6-0 6-2, compressing Michelsen's attacking margin right from the return and forcing him into predictable patterns when serving. Since then, however, the American has significantly improved, gained confidence at the Masters 1000 level, and secured important victories.
