Pogacar and the spectacular comeback: triumph in Sanremo
After the fall on the Cipressa, the Slovenian recovers and wins the Milan-San Remo ahead of Pidcock and Van Aert.
Tadej Pogacar won the 117th edition of the Milano-Sanremo, claiming the Spring Classic for the first time in his career with a heart-stopping sprint along the seafront of Sanremo. After 298 km of racing, the Slovenian edged out the Englishman Tom Pidcock by half a wheel with a time of 6h35'49".
The race went down in history not only for the result but also for the extraordinary comeback by Pogacar: a few kilometers before the climb of the Cipressa, he fell, suffering abrasions to his side and left thigh. However, the champion of UAE Team Emirates XRG managed to rejoin the leading group and prevail in the final sprint, sealing one of the most memorable performances of the season.
In third place was Belgian Wout Van Aert, who delivered a solid performance after rejoining the chasers in the final part of the race. Fourth was Danish Mads Pedersen, while the first Italian was Andrea Vendrame, finishing sixth.
Pogacar's victory at the Milano-Sanremo closes a long missing chapter in his monument classics palmarès and confirms his season of great intensity after significant successes in other World Tour races.
The Classicissima, the first major classic of the season, provided an exciting spectacle with continuous twists and turns, culminating in the final sprint that crowned one of the fittest champions in world cycling.
