The countdown is almost over. From March 26 to 29, 2026, the Karate Shotokan Modica sports club will be in the spotlight at the WKA World Karate Championships – Malta International Open. A global event that will see 1322 athletes from 31 nations compete.

For the Modica school, this trip represents a moment of deep pride and continuity. The delegation is led by coach Orazio Giunta, who will step onto the tatami not only as a coach but also as an athlete, carrying on the technical legacy received from his historic Master. He is a living demonstration of how the passion for Shotokan Karate is passed down intact from generation to generation.

The team presents a mix of young talents and the experience of their coach. All athletes will compete in both Kata (form) and Kumite (fighting), demonstrating a comprehensive technical preparation:

Leonardo Pitino, the youngest of the group, competing in the 6-7 years category; Andrea Spata: competing in the 8-9 years category; Piero Spata and Ismael Poidomani, both ready to battle in the 10-11 years category; Giorgio Tela, competing in the 11-12 years category; Orazio Giunta, coach and leader of the group, who will set an example by competing in the Kata Seniors category.

“Seeing these young athletes face an international stage – says Pippo Frasca, coach of Shotokan Karate Modica, mentor of Orazio Giunta – is proof of the great work done in the gym. Giunta is an outstanding student who today trains the champions of tomorrow, perfectly embodying the spirit of Shotokan: discipline, respect, and constant pursuit of perfection.”
