The interview
"My Messina will be saved, then we will make a big comeback," says the yellow-red president Davis.
The immediate and future prospects of the number one of the Strait company, guest in the newsroom: "With the help of the fans and the city, we are fighting to maintain the title."
Clear ideas, a lot of enthusiasm, and the involvement of the city to enhance the football project launched at the most complicated moment in the history of Messina. Guest in the newsroom, welcomed by our publisher Salvatore Palella (it's worth reminding readers that our newspaper is the main sponsor on the jersey), the yellow-red president Justin Davis confirmed his medium and long-term intentions. With a distinction: "All our thoughts, for now, are focused on maintaining the Serie D title."
A goal well within reach.
"I am convinced of it. It takes an extra effort to secure our stay, then we will plan the relaunch."
How?
"I have everything in my head. Every detail, but for now I am thinking about the present and the match in Vibo."
Your arrival, president, coincided with the most delicate phase in the history of Messina. How do you start operations with a 14-point penalty?
"We took over a club from bankruptcy with the belief that we could build something beautiful. Despite the -14, we did not hesitate to take a risk because the city of Messina transmitted to us an immense energy and strength to act and accomplish this, which – I reiterate – is a rational madness."
Certainly, the city's response during the celebration for the club's 125th anniversary was a testament to the love the people of Messina have for their club.
"On that occasion, believe me, I was emotional to the limit of the understandable. I had just arrived from Australia, and seeing a full and enthusiastic stadium confirmed to me that, yes, I had made the right choice. But that evening was also a special occasion for me."
What occasion?
"It was also the birthday of Totò Schillaci, who is no longer with us but whom we, his admirers, consider 'present' in our memories, in the feelings he gave to Italians and to Messina fans since he lived epic seasons in yellow-red. That evening, Morris Pagniello and I were very happy and proud of the choice to relaunch Messina."
We must continue on this path.
"Beyond the celebration, we are focused on the league because we want to bring joy back to a people that hasn't celebrated in twenty years. We start convinced that we can achieve a small great feat like staying in Serie D despite the -14. Then we will think about relaunching Messina and the Messina."
The fans follow you, alternating between trust and fear.
"We have this great trust; we feel it because the public follows us and stimulates us. Fear? Sometimes it surfaces, but as president, I will do everything possible to achieve the goal as soon as possible."
Sunday's commitment in Vibo.
"An important match. For us, every game is important. I have asked coaches and players to go into retreat to prepare for the match in the best way. We will do this before every challenge."
You have plans for interventions to fix the stadium.
"We have talked with the Municipality and in the future, we will do so with the new administration to find an agreement. Sports facilities are the nerve center for the activity; we are willing to invest to make them functional for the first team's work but also for youth activities and the women's sector. We want to plan for the best."
First, the salvation, though.
"I will repeat it until I'm blue in the face because all our efforts are aimed at reaching safety."
Is the -5 gap from safety bridgeable?
"I am convinced it is. We have been unlucky lately, but we must try to recover the gap as we did in the first part of the season."
