Catania has dismissed coach Mimmo Toscano: William Viali has been chosen to replace him.
The difficult decision of the club after a long night of consultations. The new coach is leaving Milan. Here’s when he will arrive in Catania and the formation adopted.
Mimmo Toscano is no longer the coach of Catania Fc. The club of Ros Pelligra has decided to change technical leadership in view of the now certain playoffs. The Benevento is unreachable and for the coach, who yesterday after the last-minute victory against Altamura suffered a health issue, the fate has seemed sealed for several days.
THE DOUBTS. Doubts about the technical management had emerged especially after the draw with Casertana, but also in the previous days when Catania had lost the chance to fight for first place due to points dropped away against opponents deemed manageable. The difference between the home record – all wins, three draws, 31 goals scored, zero conceded – which is of record average, and the performance away from home has never convinced either.
THE SACKING. Catania announced Toscano's sacking but did not immediately communicate the replacement, although the coach's dismissal had been in the air for several days. Days in which the club was able to explore various profiles for the new technical leadership which, according to rumors circulating in the red and blue environment, has already been chosen: it is William Viali, former coach of Reggiana.
VIALI ARRIVES. Viali, born in Vaprio d'Adda (Milan) on November 16, 1974, began his coaching career in the 2010/2011 season with Fiorenzuola. He then coached Piacenza, Pro Piacenza, Sudtirol, and Cuneo before taking charge of Novara with whom, in 2019, he played in the playoffs for promotion to Serie B. In January 2020, he took over the bench of Cesena, after finishing 13th at the end of the season, and in the following year led the black and white team to seventh place and participated in the promotion playoffs. In the 2021/2022 season, he finished the group in third place and participated in the Playoffs after which he resigned. He then had experiences on the bench of Cosenza, Ascoli, and again in Cosenza, before arriving at Reggiana where he was sacked in 2024 after a defeat in the derby against Sassuolo.
CHANGE OF FORMATION. With the arrival of William Viali, 51 years old, Catania will change formation: four-man defense, then variations on 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1, and in emergencies the 3-5-2. The club's choice, after a night consultation, favored the game system. Three forwards nonetheless and a career with alternating phases as is average. Viali has coached Reggiana (3-5-2), Cosenza (4-2-3-1), Ascoli (8 losses in 14 matches managed), again Cosenza (8 wins, 11 draws, 10 losses), Cesena (4-3-3 from 2019-2022) but also Sudtirol, the youth teams of Parma, and Novara.
FLIGHT AT 6 PM FROM LINATE. The Lombard coach, who will board at Linate at 6 PM to reach Catania and discuss his presence immediately with the executives in view of the training resumption scheduled for Wednesday, brings with him enthusiasm, offensive drive, and a continuous dialogue with his players. Players who until a few hours ago competed to defend Toscano in words, but also in actions: in the match against Altamura, Catania rushed forward to win it. And they succeeded. The embraces with coach Di Tacchio and Casasola are the manifesto of the thoughts that were later expressed during interviews with our newspaper.
