Two match points and so much heart: Scalia Sciacca makes the vice-leader Bronte tremble
White-blue pride: the Saccensi only give in at the tie-break amidst the applause of the Palatenda
An epic battle, resolved only at the last breath. The "Roccazzella" Palatenda was the stage for a high-level challenge between Scalia Sciacca and the powerhouse Aquila Bronte. The Saccensi came close to achieving the season's feat, surrendering only in the tie-break (2-3) after having brushed against a victory that would have been well-deserved.
The match opens on a tightrope: Bronte wins the first set 25-23, despite a furious comeback from Frinzi Russo's men. The reaction of the home team, however, is textbook: in the second set, Scalia dominates in every fundamental, crushing the visitors with a clear 25-16. The momentum remains with the biancazzurri in the third set, where Atria and his teammates show impeccable tactical maturity, closing at 25-22 and taking a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set is a film not suitable for the faint-hearted. Bronte tries to escape, Sciacca stitches it up, overtakes, and secures two match points for the definitive 3-1. Here, the experience of the Etneans emerges forcefully: a block and an ace save the second-placed team, dragging the contest to the fifth set. In the tie-break, the understandable mental fatigue of the Saccensi paves the way for Bronte, which closes at 8-15.
The audience of great occasions gave a long applause to a Scalia Sciacca capable of playing on par with the big teams. The point earned moves the standings, even if it costs the sixth place; Bronte, on the other hand, sees the top spot drifting away. What remains is the performance: Sciacca is here and has shown that it has character, quality, and the stuff to dream big.
