Messina's center-right in crisis after the referendum: Siracusano in the balance and heated debate on the neighborhoods

Follow us

Nervous crisis in the Messina center-right after the referendum result. The meeting convened by the center-right immediately after the voting outcome revealed a coalition torn apart by internal conflicts and on the verge of exploding over the composition of the lists. According to many in the background of the center-right, Matilde Siracusano would be the first to take a step back. The Fi parliamentarian personally advocated for the Yes. And after the flop, she would have decided not to run again as the lead candidate for Fi in the City Council. A mass exodus that would not be limited to the lists for the council.

What is keeping the coalition's stability in balance is, in fact, the composition of the lists in the neighborhoods. The tug-of-war between Francantonio Genovese and the rest of the coalition is, in fact, keeping everyone on edge. According to some well-informed sources, Genovese has asked for the presidency of the V, VII, and II districts, threatening otherwise to form lists separately from the rest of the coalition. Meanwhile, the united coalition is trying to divert attention by attacking Cateno De Luca: «It is extremely serious that someone holding an institutional position, who should care about democratic participation, publicly claims not to have voted in such an important constitutional referendum as that on justice», reads a statement signed by the regional secretaries of the center-right parties. Also attacking De Luca just minutes after the referendum vote outcome was the provincial secretary of the Pd, Armando Hyerace: «Sud Chiama Nord has avoided confrontation, confirming a wavering and vague approach that has long characterized Cateno De Luca. A political line that is not casual, but functional: it serves to allow him to position - or reposition - himself each time, wherever he thinks it benefits him most

«I would have had a thousand reasons to wear the shirt and go against the magistrates, but legitimizing a political party did not sit well with me: this reform is nonsense, the problems of justice, which I have experienced firsthand, were not even touched upon», explained De Luca in one of his videos. Meanwhile, attempting to keep the coalition intact is Nino Germanà, regional secretary of the League: «It is clear that a political clarification is needed among the parties of the center-right coalition. Without analyzing this defeat and making it fruitful, we risk crashing.» Meanwhile, the next vote, at least in Messina, is just around the corner.
