The turnout numbers in the province of the Strait, the first in Sicily for the number of voters.
The Municipality of Messina stands at 47.88 percent, with 83,632 voters out of a total of 174,660 registered voters.
In comparison, during the 2025 abrogative referendum, the turnout in Messina, at the final closure of the polling stations, recorded about 41,282 voters, equal to 23.59%, an average figure related to the five referendum questions.
Throughout the province, however, the figure rises to 49.18%, the highest percentage in Sicily; it is also the province with the highest number of municipalities, which total 108. The municipality in Messina with the highest turnout is Brolo, which recorded 58.99 percent of voters.
Out of 682 polling sections counted out of 776, the No is at 56.33, the Yes at 43.67. In Messina, the No is at 58.89, with 238 out of 253 sections counted. In Brolo, the No also wins with 50.57 percent, against 49.43 when only one section remains.
“There is a first figure to strongly claim: turnout. Messina is the Sicilian province with the highest participation. It is a sign of a community that has chosen to participate, to not remain on the margins, fully exercising its right.
Then there is the political data of the result. The affirmation of the NO is a clear choice in defense of constitutional balance, the quality of justice, and the rule of law, said Armando Hyerace, provincial secretary of the Democratic Party of Messina.
A clear response to a proposal that would have profoundly impacted the democratic structure of the country.
This vote also has the merit of clarity. Those who chose to take a stand did so without ambiguity, making it clear what idea of justice and democracy belongs to each individual. The distance between the center-right and center-left today is clear, visible, measurable. And then there are those who chose not to choose. A pilatesque attitude, which avoids addressing the merits of a decisive issue.
Sud Chiama Nord has avoided confrontation, confirming a wavering and nebulous approach that has long characterized Cateno De Luca. This political line is not casual, but functional: it serves to allow him to position - or reposition - himself from time to time, wherever he believes it is most advantageous. It is an evident way of emptying democracy of its deeper meaning: representing a community is quite different from using it to one's own advantage,” concludes Hyerace.
