Before his resignation, the metropolitan mayor, Federico
Basile, announced the resubmission to Palazzo dei Leoni of the
resolution for the creation of the Peloritani Social Services, the
special company intended for the management of the social services of the entity. The process,
however, has stalled and there is no trace of the document, despite the
political and administrative leadership of the Metropolitan City being
entrusted to the deputy mayor, Flavio Santoro. Unions and operators remain
in waiting. Recently, the metropolitan councilor, Libero Gioveni, has
brought attention back to the issue, expressing
concern for the services to be guaranteed to “special” students. The
establishment of the new company involves about 800 workers, mostly Asacom, who provide
transportation, hygiene assistance, and communication support services in high schools throughout the metropolitan area. After the protests, a
discussion took place between the unions and the provincial administration. At the center
of the debate is the need to safeguard employment levels and

to define more clearly the competencies that the Peloritani Social
Services will need to have in a particularly delicate sector.
