“The feelings about the referendum outcome are difficult to decipher, everything is very uncertain and we, of course, hope that the no prevails for a reform that we consider completely wrong and that, all in all, calls into question one of the few certainties we have had in the post-war period with the Constitution, namely that politics cannot influence, except in pathological cases of course, the decisions of the judiciary.” This was stated to ANSA by the prosecutor of Catania, Francesco Curcio, before participating in a meeting in view of the referendum on justice on March 22 and 23.

Regarding the progress of the referendum campaign in recent weeks, Curcio emphasized that he has “seen a bit of everything.” “I have seen - he added - things that appealed to the voters' gut, I have seen attempts to explain correctly what the stakes were and what the scope of the reform was.”

If the no wins - Curcio observed - the serious problems of justice remain that are not at all addressed by this reform, which deals with something else entirely, but not with the functioning of justice for the benefit of citizens.”

If the yes wins - emphasized the prosecutor of Catania - the path opens to the separation of careers with the subordination of the prosecutor to the executive. But to do this, to achieve this goal, it is necessary to first separate the prosecutors from the judges and thus we expose ourselves to a very strong risk.”
