Killed by order of the boss of the Laudani: Piazza Lanza commemorates the prison officer Bodenza

It has been 31 years since the murder of Luigi Bodenza. On that cursed night of March 25, 1994, the prison officer was returning home after his shift at the Piazza Lanza prison. The killers shot him dead on Via Due Obelischi. The hitmen acted on the orders of the mafia boss of the Laudani, Giuseppe Maria Di Giacomo, who later became a collaborator of justice. A murder without a reason: Bodenza was chosen by the mafia boss to give a “lesson” to the prison police. A trial marked the conviction of the murderers and the masterminds behind that crime. The crime of an innocent who continues to speak through his family and colleagues.

Today at the Piazza Lanza prison, there will be a ceremony to commemorate the victim of the mafia and of duty. The event, organized by the Management of the Prison, will see the participation of the civil, military, and religious authorities of Catania. A delegation of students from the Istituto Spedalieri will also be present, who “will thus have the opportunity - says the director of Piazza Lanza, Nunziatina Di Fazio - to closely learn the story of a servant of the State brutally killed by the mafia.” The exercise of memory is one of the cornerstones of the fight against organized crime.

This anniversary falls a few days before the celebrations of the Foundation of the Prison Police Corps. On the occasion of the 209th anniversary, a provincial celebration has been organized in the historic Palazzo Platamone. “It will be a way to pay tribute to the corps, to make citizens aware of the delicate tasks performed and the contribution made to the entire community throughout history by members of the prison police.” The ceremony will also include a delegation of students from the Istituto Falcone di Giarre and the Turrisi Colonna of Catania.
