Giardini Naxos: cleanup of the beaches begins after Cyclone Harry
Commissioner Impastato announces the green light for the assessment: the tender for the cleanup of the coastline begins after the "medicane," with priority given to the Pallio district, Nike, and Schisò beach.
"Approved the report for the removal of waste along the coastline and initiated the procedures for the contracting of the works." This was announced by Giovanni Impastato, extraordinary commissioner of Palazzo dei Naxioti. The municipal offices have thus launched the plan to clear the accumulations that followed the cleanup of debris caused by the fury of cyclone “Harry”.
After the awarding, the Department of Environment of the Sicilian Region will be informed of the start of extraordinary cleaning activities. There are many critical points scattered in the heart of Giardini Naxos. The first among them is contrada Pallio. The area had been identified as an emergency landfill to collect debris and materials caused by the storm. However, as days went by, the storage area was also used as a place to abandon daily waste. Therefore, a cleanup of that area is necessary.
But there are other micro-landfills to pay attention to, such as the area of Nike, an installation that withstood the force of the sea. Another stretch to monitor is the Schisò beach, where remains of boats can also be seen. In short, the commissioner is initiating an absolutely necessary intervention also because the swimming season is now upon us and the tourist town must leave behind the difficult moment of the cyclone and think about the immediate future.
