The National Seismic Network of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has recorded a significant seismic sequence between the provinces of Messina, Palermo, and Enna. Already this morning, the earth had trembled off the coast of Alicudi.

The main shock, which attracted the most attention from residents, occurred at 19:04, with a magnitude of 4.1 initially estimated at 4.2.

The epicenter was located 2 kilometers south of Castel di Lucio, in the Messina area, at a hypocentral depth of 26 kilometers

This was not an isolated event. Before the main event, the INGV network had already detected six foreshocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.7 to 3.7: two in the morning and four in the minutes immediately preceding the main shock. Activity continued into the evening: by 20:30, the Institute had located a total of 19 earthquakes related to the sequence, with magnitudes between 1.0 and that of 4.2.  The shock was widely felt by the population.
