The crime between Catania and Carlentini
The "confession" of the killer: "The bullet remains, it is iron"
The murder of Privitera: the interception that implicates the suspect. Yesterday, a silent scene from the investigating judge for both arrested individuals.
He tried to create an alibi for the evening of January 5 last year. The day when Salvatore Alfio Privitera was murdered and burned. But then the suspect spoke too much. Pietro Catanzaro, arrested on Thursday for murder and concealment of a corpse along with the Lentini resident Danilo Sortino, had been summoned by the carabinieri as a witness a few days after the discovery of human remains inside the burned T-Roc in Carlentini. When he left the barracks, he called someone trying to convince him to confirm the version he had provided to the investigators. "They saw that we have a call at nine in the evening on the fifth... when we were supposed to go out to eat. Okay? Do you remember that we were supposed to go out to eat?", he said in mid-January unaware that he was being intercepted. And he insisted: "I'm telling you this for a reason, today or tomorrow if they should call you, you already know the discussion... I'm telling you... I don't know, if the carabinieri should look for you... in the meantime, you are warned".
The misstep Catanzaro junior, son of the Cappello boss Giovanni “u milanisi”, made was when he called a certain Turi to comment on the discovery of the corpse. Or rather what remained of the body. The two interlocutors were reasoning about some details that for the investigating judge Giuseppina Montuori could only be known by someone who had killed. Because until that moment those details had not been disclosed to the family and there had been no publication even in the newspapers. The clue was the bullet in the skull: but no one knew that Privitera had been shot with a shot to the back of the neck. "Turi: the bullet remains, it's iron!! But in the skull, in the thing, don't they see the hole?", said the suspect. "The interception confirms the dynamics established only later by the autopsy, namely that Privitera did not die accidentally during a fight, but was executed", noted the investigating judge in the order. For the judge, those phrases have the value of an indirect confession.
And it's not over. When someone warned him that Ippocampo di Mare is being monitored, he decided to turn off some cameras: "At Ippo there are 58 environmental units 264 intercepted phones buy phone card put your phones on a truck going north don't do account recovery".
The other suspect, Danilo Sortino arrested on Thursday in Calabria, had a fundamental operational role in the murder especially in the phases following the murder: transport and destruction of the corpse. Sortino, being from Lentini, had the task of making the traces disappear. "The Carlentinese could have told him 'now we take him to a place where they won't find him anymore' because the sons of sucaminchia burned him for a living... The 'carlentinese' is there, two hundred meters from where we found the car", said Privitera's relatives. For the investigating judge, it is "absolutely irrefutable" that Sortino transported the corpse since his phone connected to the cell towers along the exact same route taken by the victim's car GPS towards Carlentini.
Yesterday, the guarantee interrogations of the two suspects took place before the investigating judge Montuori and the substitutes of the Dda etnea, Alessandro Sorrentino and Michela Maresca who coordinated the investigations of the carabinieri. Catanzaro, defended by lawyer Rosario Arena, and Sortino exercised their right not to answer.
