Alarm in Isolabella: "Tourists among the garbage"

"If action is not taken promptly, even the garbage collected, from time to time, by volunteers at Isolabella will quickly return to the sea." The alarm comes from Daniel Carnabuci, of the association "Serapide", which is pushing for the coasts of Taormina to be cleared of garbage and debris. "After cyclone Harry, the entire Ionian coast of Sicily - says Carnabuci - was overwhelmed by waste, mostly resulting from the destruction of structures that stood along the shoreline. In Taormina, in the iconic Isolabella bay, a group of volunteers, mainly represented by members of the associations "Fishing Club" and "Mother Nature", immediately took action to collect the garbage in a differentiated manner, waiting for the Administration to take care of its disposal. Two months have now passed, and as was widely predictable, the spring storms have once again scattered all the accumulated garbage along the beach. Action must be taken to prevent these incidents from recurring."

"It should be noted - continues Carnabuci - that the tourist flow in the capital of Sicilian tourism is always present even in winter, where, not infrequently, foreign bathers can be seen enjoying the sea and the beauty of this place. It should also be noted that the 2026 tourist season has begun. However, it is inconceivable to present this jewel to the world as a dump. As has been repeatedly mentioned by various associations, there is no plan for cleaning the seabeds where waste of all kinds can also be found. However, a fundraising is underway, promoted by "Blu Sea Diving" of Paolo Micalizzi. In my opinion, civil society should be respected and thanked, especially when it sets a good example and compensates for local administrative shortcomings."
