Major pile-up on the Messina highway, truck driver reported
The man, a repeat offender, was driving a truck that was not up to date with inspections.
The driver of the heavy vehicle that caused the massive pile-up on the A/20 highway between the exits of Villafranca and Milazzo yesterday morning, involving over 50 vehicles, has been identified and reported. According to the traffic police of Messina, it is a professional driver with multiple criminal records, aged 54, from a company in Campania, who was driving a truck without a valid inspection that, losing a significant amount of diesel, made the highway slippery in several spots, causing the loss of control of vehicles heading towards Palermo.

Thorough investigations by the personnel of the Traffic Police of Messina have allowed for the identification of the driver and for him to be reported for the crime of endangering transport safety, seizing the heavy vehicle, and administratively contesting the lack of inspection, the loss of cargo along with poor securing. The presumption of innocence of the accused remains valid now and until a final conviction.
