Chaos on the 'Ragusana'
Roundabout of the SS 194 between Francofonte and Buccheri, truck on fire: safety can no longer wait
A truck overturns and catches fire, timely rescue efforts and new requests for signage and structural interventions for safety.
The roundabout of the Ss 194 "Ragusana" at the Buccheri exit, between Francofonte and Lentini, is back in the spotlight after yet another serious accident: a truck loaded with plastic overturned and caught fire, reigniting the concerns of motorists, commuters, and institutions. The stretch, already considered by many a true trap, coexists with heavy traffic, large vehicles, and construction sites for the future Catania-Ragusa highway, conditions that make driving particularly hazardous.

The layout of the roundabout and the insufficient signage — especially at night and dawn — encourage wrong-way entries, dangerous U-turns, and excessive speeds at the end of long straightaways. In the recent incident, the promptness of the rescue was crucial: construction vehicles provided water, passersby — including players from Vittoria FC — offered assistance, and guard Giuseppe Basile alerted the emergency services and facilitated the landing of the air ambulance. The truck driver, trapped for over thirty minutes, was rescued thanks to the timely intervention of 118 and firefighters.
The accident adds to other recent incidents and a tragedy from 2022, fueling the demand for urgent measures: advanced, bright, and visible signage, effective speed limits, and structural interventions to prevent wrong-way entries. In an area already marked by highway construction sites, road safety can no longer wait: concrete and swift decisions are needed to avoid new victims.
