Holy Week in Jerusalem: reduced rituals and Palm Sunday procession canceled

The rituals of Holy Week in Jerusalem are undergoing variations due to the conflict. This is confirmed by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem following reports that have emerged in the media.

"The restrictions imposed by the conflict and the events of recent days do not suggest an imminent improvement. In constant dialogue with the relevant authorities, together with the other Christian Churches, we are assessing how it is possible, in forms to be agreed upon, to celebrate the central mystery of our salvation in the heart of our Churches. The situation remains in constant evolution and it is not possible to provide definitive guidance for the days to come; we will therefore be forced to a day-by-day coordination." But "it is clear, however, that ordinary celebrations open to all cannot take place".

The Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa meanwhile communicates that "the traditional Palm Sunday procession, which ascends from the Mount of Olives to Jerusalem, is canceled. It will be replaced by a moment of prayer for the city of Jerusalem, in a location to be determined." The chrism mass of Holy Thursday "is postponed to a date to be determined, as soon as the situation allows, possibly within the Easter time. The Dicastery for Divine Worship has already granted the necessary approval".
