Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, but did not hit the American-British military base located on the island in the Indian Ocean. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing several U.S. official sources. One of the missiles experienced a malfunction during flight, while an American warship launched an SM-3 interceptor against the other, the newspaper specified. It is unclear when the attack occurred. The island ofDiego Garcia is an atoll of 44km², and is the largest in the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean about 1600km south of India. The island is a British Overseas Territory and belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory.

This is "an important step," writes Mehr, stating that the attack "demonstrates that the range of Iranian missiles goes beyond what the enemy had previously imagined."

And late last night, the Israeli army stated that its air defenses had activated to intercept a new wave of missiles launched from Iran. "The Israel Defense Forces have identified missiles launched from Iran towards the territory of the State of Israel. The defense systems are operational to intercept the threat."
