A local earthquake of magnitude ML 5.9 affected the Gulf of Naples and the area of Capri, in the province of Naples, last night.

The event was recorded by the Seismic Room of Rome of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at 23:03:48 UTC on March 9, 2026, corresponding to 00:03:48 Italian time on March 10 (UTC+1).

According to data released by INGV, the epicenter was located at the coordinates 40.5237°N and 14.1318°E, with a hypocenter at a depth of 414 kilometers, an unusually high value.

The earthquake, classified as a deep-focus event in the southern Tyrrhenian sector, would have seen surface effects mitigated precisely due to the great depth.

At the moment, no damage to people or property has been reported, nor are there any tsunami alerts issued by the competent authorities.

The INGV continues to monitor the evolution of the seismic situation to detect any aftershocks.

Residents in Campania are invited to consult the official portal of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (www.ingv.it) for real-time updates.

In the context of constant monitoring in the Vesuvius area, this episode reaffirms the importance of the advanced monitoring networks managed by INGV-Rome.
