The swarm of bees in the historic center
Modica, moments of concern but also of keen curiosity this morning in the heart of the city.
Around 11:30 AM, a large swarm of bees chose to settle in Corso Umberto I, right in front of the historic building that houses the Municipal Library.
The unusual scene attracted passersby and residents, many of whom documented the event with smartphones and cameras.
The insects concentrated on the roof and the luggage rack of a van parked along the main artery, forming a true “cloud” of buzzing.
Close-up images show the extraordinary density of the swarm, with thousands of bees resting on the silver body of the vehicle and around the upper bars.
Fortunately, no incidents or stings were reported; numerous citizens observed with respect, aware of the essential role of these pollinators in the ecosystem.
Local Police officers promptly intervened, alerting the Fire Department to secure the area and divert pedestrian traffic to a safe distance, ensuring public safety without excessively disturbing the colony.
An experienced beekeeper was also called in, a standard procedure to recover the queen and, consequently, transfer the entire swarm safely and humanely to a more suitable location.
“It was a surprising event, but handled with calm and professionalism by the authorities,” commented a resident. “It’s nice to see nature making its way even in the historic center, as long as everything happens safely.”
Swarming is a natural phenomenon typical of spring and summer, during which bee families split to form new colonies. At this stage, the insects are usually not aggressive as they are focused on finding a new home rather than defending the hive.
Currently, the situation is under control and the beekeeper's final intervention is awaited.
Corso Umberto I remains regularly passable, with the only recommendation to stay away from the affected area until the recovery operations are completed.
