Training, safety, and maritime cultures in the spotlight
Paola Barrera and Luigi Vincenti
This morning, at the headquarters of the Port Authority of Pozzallo, the memorandum of understanding was signed to initiate the school-work training paths between the Port Authority – Coast Guard of Pozzallo and the Secondary Education Institute “Giorgio La Pira” (Transport and Logistics address), represented by the school principal, Prof. Paola Barrera.
The agreement provides for the active involvement of students in the daily activities of the Pozzallo maritime command.
The internship, lasting three weeks, will involve 23 students who, organized in groups with weekly rotation, will alternate in the various operational sectors to closely learn about the multiple services provided daily to maritime users.
The initiative offers young people a direct contact with the maritime institution, allowing them to explore on-site topics of primary importance: navigation safety, marine environment protection, control of activities in the port area, and protection of human life at sea.
The program will be enriched by conferences on specific institutional competencies, guided tours of port infrastructures, and activities on board the main vessels that dock daily at the port of Pozzallo.
The signing took place in the presence of the students and tutors of the program, representing not only a formal act but also the concrete start of a shared growth experience between school and institution, based on the values of responsibility, legality, and professionalism.
Through direct participation in the activities of the Corps, the students will be able to acquire basic skills and, above all, consolidate their aspirations through a path of conscious self-assessment of personal and professional aptitudes.
“With the signing of this protocol – stated the Commander of the Port Authority of Pozzallo, Captain (Cp) Luigi Vincenti – we are starting a path that can offer young people a direct and concrete experience within the operational reality of the Coast Guard. Opening the doors to students means conveying not only technical knowledge, but above all values: a sense of duty, respect for rules, and awareness of the responsibility that the sea requires. To the students, I extend my wishes to live this experience with curiosity, commitment, and a sense of responsibility, because the sea can become their future but is already part of their responsibility and their growth path.”
The initiative is part of the broader commitment of the Coast Guard to promote the culture of the sea and to strengthen the bond between institutions and the territory, with particular attention to the new generations.
