The “Student Connections” take shape in Sicily. The initiative, promoted by the Municipality of Comiso, was presented to the ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities), receiving appreciation and willingness to collaborate.

“We found openness and sharing from the association,” declare councilor Giusi Cubisino and mayor Maria Rita Schembari.

“We were present in Niscemi – explains councilor Cubisino – the mayor and I, to show our support to the residents of that troubled area, during the meeting of the ANCI regional council. During the proceedings, there was a discussion among administrators, and having already activated a twinning between the high schools of Comiso and Caltagirone, we discussed the project that the Comiso administration will present in May, for the second edition, titled ‘Student Connections’, where the dominant theme is kindness, emotions, legality, and active citizenship for the future of young people in Sicily. Indeed, legality cannot exist without emotions.”

The councilor adds that “Connections is a path started last year, with schools and students as protagonists, aimed at highlighting feelings and respect for the rules, and that in this new edition will delve into active citizenship, already tested in the interaction between students of the artistic high school “Carducci” of Comiso and those of the scientific high school “Ettore Majorana” of Caltagirone: “It was a true social experiment where the kids demonstrated that they are already active citizens.”

“In Niscemi, the Regional Assembly of ANCI met with a very specific agenda – adds the mayor of Comiso – but also to express solidarity with the city that suffered such a serious wound on January 25 of this year. On that occasion, since there was also discussion about ANCI Youth, and in particular a project on ‘Restanza’, which is about the possibility of slowing the hemorrhage of young people and minds from our region to Northern Italy and often even abroad, several projects were presented. Among these, the beautiful projects carried out by my councilor, Giusi Cubisino, including ‘Student Connections’ and, lastly, the project for twinning between students from Comiso and students from Caltagirone, as already explained. The presence at the assembly was important” – concludes Maria Rita Schembari – “because if there is a goal that we have set as the administration of Comiso, it is precisely to give space and priority to young people, to their needs, to their civic education and, at the same time, to the renovation of school buildings according to the most modern regulations regarding school construction.”
