childhood hub
Goodbye closed shutters at the Esseneto nursery, work completed at the end of May. Here’s what the new home for the children will look like.
Councilor Principato: "What has remained stagnant for years is now being returned to the community."
There is a date on the calendar that marks the end of a long hibernation for the Esseneto neighborhood: May 21, 2026. On that day, the redevelopment of the historic nursery school will be officially completed, returning to the city a facility that has remained for too many years a symbol of stagnation and closed shutters.
The intervention, funded with a massive investment of 1 million euros as part of the PNRR, represents a race against time won well ahead of the national deadline set for June. This is not just a building renovation, but a true "social 'restitution'" operation for Agrigento families.
A record construction site towards the ribbon-cutting
The project has seen a tight synergy between the department, municipal technicians, and the executing company. A key role was played by the RUP, engineer Alberto Avenia, who not only oversaw the construction site but has already projected the facility into the near future by participating in the national call for furnishings. The verdict for the interior setup is expected in a few days: the goal is to transform what were empty rooms into a modern, colorful, and functional space.
Satisfaction has been expressed by the Miccichè administration, which claims the ability to transform the secured funding into tangible works.
The comment from Councillor Principato
Highlighting the importance of the milestone is the Councillor for Public Works, Gerlando Principato, who has followed the evolution of the site step by step: "The images we are showing the city today testify to the result of intense work. This intervention represents a concrete signal: what has remained stagnant for years is now being reopened and returned to the community. In a few days, what was closed will become a modern space for children and families in the neighborhood."
Beyond concrete: a service for families
The reopening of the Esseneto nursery is not just a piece of public construction news, but a direct response to the lack of services for children in the heart of the city. In an Agrigento that looks to future challenges, the reactivation of an educational hub represents a fundamental piece for local welfare and for the revitalization of working-class neighborhoods, demonstrating that even historic "unfinished projects" can have a happy ending.
