Scicli is Plastic Free again, recognition received in Rome
This year, the level of virtuosity symbolized by the iconic turtles has increased from one to two.
The award withdrawn in Rome
Scicli, the city of Commissario Montalbano, confirms its commitment against plastic pollution and wins the title of “Plastic Free Municipality 2026” for the second consecutive year.
The award ceremony took place last Saturday at the Teatro Olimpico in Rome: representing Mayor Marino, councilor Cettina Portelli accepted the award along with the heads of the municipal technical office, Andrea Pisani and Sebastiano Vasile, and the Plastic Free representative of the Municipality, Giuseppe Manenti.
In Sicily, only 20 administrations have received the certification; in the province of Ragusa, Scicli is among the three awarded, along with Modica and Ragusa.
On a national level, there are 141 municipalities recognized for the effectiveness of their environmental protection policies.
Saturday's event was the fifth edition of the national Plastic Free Municipalities ceremony, the annual event that highlights the most virtuous administrations for the fight against waste abandonment, the promotion of sustainable lifestyles, and the commitment to reducing, recycling, and collecting plastic, recognized by various organizations and consortia.
Each municipality is assigned a degree of virtuousness through the association's symbol, the iconic turtles: this year, Scicli has moved from one to two.
