The birthplace of Vincenzo Bellini, located in piazza San Francesco d'Assisi, is not just any building. It is the place where one of the greatest composers of 19th-century Italian opera was born, the author of masterpieces such as Norma, La sonnambula, i Puritani. Bellini is a central figure of belcanto, admired worldwide for the purity of his melodies and expressive depth.

For these reasons, the condition of the building where his birthplace is located on the first floor deserves more attention, both structurally and in terms of order. First of all, the inner courtyard of Palazzo Gravina Cruyllas is used as a condominium parking lot (also due to the presence of bed and breakfasts). This creates a clear conflict between private use and the public value of the property. If we add to this the presence of various utility meters, and exposed electrical cables, peeling walls, the floor torn up in several places, and poor cleanliness, the overall picture becomes even more negative.

A situation that appears, therefore, in evident contradiction with the importance of the cultural site. This is not just an aesthetic problem, but a lack of protection for the cultural heritage of the city, a poor respect for a symbolic place, and consequent difficulties for touristic and cultural enjoyment.

"Since 2021, - explains Mario Reitano, a passionate advocate of Catanese culture and history - I have been fighting and reporting this state of affairs, certainly not idyllic for a cultural and historical site that should be of high value and therefore treated with "yellow gloves". That is, as would happen in any other cultural city, whether it is in Italy or a foreign country. I therefore ask, for the umpteenth time, as I have done in the past through the media, that those in charge finally decide to intervene to restore the decorum that the house that gave birth to the great Vincenzo Bellini deserves." According to Reitano, the house-museum, which contains unique memorabilia related to the great Catanese composer, "besides being better valued, deserves more impactful publicity, in the tourist and cultural routes of Catania. It deserves it, if nothing else, also for the beautiful multimedia museum, located on the second floor of the building."
