THE TV SERIES
Charlie's Angels 50 years later. The reunion is ready.
The protagonists of the cult series will meet in Los Angeles amid the anticipation of fans and the celebrations of the pilot episode. Because even today they are still beloved in Italy.
Charlie’s Angels are set to return. Sony Pictures is working on a reunion that will take place on April 6 in Los Angeles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of the pilot episode of a series that has become a timeless television cult.
Three of the living stars, actresses Kate Jackson, Cheryl Ladd, and Jaclyn Smith will reunite at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to meet fans who have been purchasing tickets for months. Charlie’s Angels is a television series created by Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg, airing from 1976 to 1981 on the American network ABC. The production created 115 episodes, preceded by a pilot film broadcast on March 21, 1976. The three “angels” of the first season – glamorous investigators engaged in solving important cases around the world, guided by a mysterious boss - were Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson), Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett), and Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith).
With the exit of Farrah Fawcett at the end of the first season and Kate Jackson at the end of the third, their characters were replaced by Kris Munroe (Jill's sister, played by Cheryl Ladd) and Tiffany Welles (Shelley Hack), who appeared only in the fourth season and was then replaced by Julie Rogers (Tanya Roberts) in the final season.
Farrah Fawcett reappeared in some episodes of seasons three and four as a “guest star.” Jaclyn Smith was the only actress to appear in all seasons, along with David Doyle, who played John Bosley, Charlie's assistant and the link between him and the “angels.”
In Italy, the first three seasons aired from October 11, 1979 on local channels affiliated with the GPE - Telemond consortium, thanks to an agreement with RTI Distribuzione S.p.A. In 1982, the newly established Rete 4 broadcast the fourth season for the first time, while the fifth and final season arrived in the spring of 1983. The series was then re-broadcast on various national channels.
Why is the series still so beloved in Italy? Three beautiful investigators who do not go unnoticed, the flowing hairstyles that were imitated by thousands of women to resemble at least a bit the TV divas who became heroines of the small screen, the determination that marked the female empowerment of policewomen fighting injustices and corruption while adding a touch of irony to their daily lives. A winning formula, just as the choices of the protagonists were spot on. Farrah Fawcett was an icon in those years for her romantic ties (with actor Lee Majors) and for the beauty that graced the covers of all the most famous magazines. Even in Italy, weekly and monthly publications competed to immortalize the Charlie's Angels and tell behind-the-scenes stories of their private lives, successes on both small and big screens.
Fawcett passed away from illness in 2009, remaining, like her fellow studio Townsend colleagues, a sex symbol. Roberts was a Bond Girl in 1985 in "007 A View to a Kill"; she passed away in 2021. Cheryl Ladd and Jaclyn Smith have remained friends and recently renewed their appeal to their admirers on social media ahead of the reunion in April. Kate Jackson has overcome financial and health issues in recent years, adopting a child as a single parent after going through three marriages and just as many divorces. Shelley Hack has been a model, actress, TV producer, and even a political consultant. She now lives away from the spotlight.
Between 2000 and 2008, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu relaunched the brand in cinema: the 2000 reboot grossed $264 million worldwide, leading to the sequel 2003's “Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle”, produced by Barrymore with her Flower Films.
The original protagonists had already reunited on several occasions: after a first television reunion in 1992, in 1998 Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett came together again in “An All Star Party” for Aaron Spelling to pay tribute to the creator of the series, fondly remembering the show and its iconic style. In 2006, during the Emmy ceremony, Jackson, Fawcett, and Smith participated in an emotional tribute to bid farewell to Aaron Spelling, the producer of Charlie's Angels, who passed away that year.
After the passing of Farraw Fawcett, we recently mentioned that the last angel of the fifth season, Tania Roberts, has also died. Shelley Hack has retired from the spotlight and lives away from the limelight. It is not certain that she wants to participate in the reunion.
